We can say Civic means the political, theoretical and practical aspects of citizenship, and their rights and duties as individuals and as a citizen of a country. Also, we must critically dissect the word civic education and pay a close attention on how it relates to the importance we are discussing, we can say civic education is the study or the art of learning the processes that affect people’s beliefs, capabilities, rights, duties related to the theoretical, practical and political aspects as a citizen of a state or country. Civic education is by no means connected to the military and it has nothing to do with one’s religion, it is the relationship between individuals and their governance in a democracy.

It, therefore, brings understanding about the political community and its citizen’s membership in the body of politics which means citizenship in a democracy, it promotes the understanding of democracy and people’s right and duties in the society, state, or country. It also helps teach people to know the laws governing the state, it promotes the orientation of citizens and consciousness about governance.

The Education of civilians in Nigeria schools, as opposed to the military, empowered the citizens in organizing and conducting themselves to be self – dependent and be politically impactful in the societies, which therefore bring peace and liberty to all individuals in the county.

In Nigeria, school help develops students’ knowledge and skills, character, commitment, the media, the community, religion, with important influences. School influences citizen and plays a major role and great responsibilities in the life of students. Civic Education was introduced to schools to impart the citizens of Nigeria more about the democracy and what it all entails on governance, the cooperative agreement between citizen and rulers, government and external bodies, government and foreign agreements that will have an impact on citizens.

The learning of Civic Education begins from the primary school to secondary schools, even higher institution has some courses about civics. These are all the ways to encourage, enlighten the citizens more and broad about democratic self-government which means that citizens can actively be involved in their governance and every decision making process in the country.

Civic Education helps the pupil to understand better their impact in the society, it enables them to see the future that lies ahead of them in the county and how they can be of help in one way or another in developing the country. It is necessary that educators and leaners such as Nigeria students to have a vision for their governance and that education should cover all aspects including the political sector. They are supposed to be oriented about the history of the constitution of the country, the development so far, the innovations both old and new in government, what the outcome are, use and abuse of the constitution. These knowledge gives students a relation to the democratic society and makes them well behaved individual in the society wherever they find themselves.

Civic Education, therefore, leads to the responsibility of individuals to the society, commitment to the constitution of the country, respect and relationship with citizens, human rights and duties, polite friendship in local and national affairs, and tolerance. It creates a virtue in Nigerian schools, thereby gives or enhance a democratic way of life in the lives of students, in homes, market, schools, and the society at large. It creates the habit to be a good citizen of the country without violence, conflict or struggles.

Civic education, as a matter of fact, helps individuals to maintain social factors, health factors (forward thinking) community orientation, individual behavior, policy-making, public safety, exposure to mass media and emerging technologies. Civic education gives the people power to do rights in the country and enable the young citizens to create a society for democracy and participating fully in the system.

Civic education opens the eyes of students to their personal, political, economic, civil rights. The personal rights which are rights individuals have over all that concerns them, the rights over their body, their security, personal property, personal liberty and private life. Civic education makes them understand their personal existence in life as a citizen of Nigeria. One’s personal right is their own identity.

The political right is the understanding civic education will give Nigeria students, which is the participation in the governance, both the administration and establishment of a government. Political rights include natural justice in law, the right an accused have, individual freedom, individual participation in politics without discrimination, right to vote, the right to self-defense, right to assemble, right to seek legal remedy, right to a fair trial.

ECONOMIC RIGHT

Civic education in Nigeria is important to gives Nigerian youth what their economic rights are which are rights to education, right to housing, right to health, the right to science, right to travel within or outside the state, a right to drink and eat healthily, a right to possessions, right to contract, right to work, to rest, right to material security especially in old age and to disables.  It elucidates the mind of the citizen on basic amenities expected of the government.

Civic rights or knowledge is an advantage of Civic education because it is concerned in their roles as a citizen of Nigeria, their impact as a citizen. Their rights to movement, the right to life, the right to elect and to be elected, freedom of speech and expression, freedom of meeting, freedom of formation, freedom of religion, freedom of thought, of conscience, freedom to private life, freedom to make a family, right to hold position, and also civic responsibility or obligations which expected of all citizen to obey to the last end.

Civic education provides civic skills for Nigerian students, skills to be able to think critically about a political issue, skills that enable them to know the history and importance of politics, teaches them to identify and have understanding of the flag, natural monument, political events and every other important information and the meaning of significance of irrelevance. It teaches the skills to make decisions on their own, the skills to become independent and intellectual skills.

Civic education provides civilians life, politics, and government as it makes the country constitution a familiarity for the citizen. It also enables them to understand the relationship between politics and government of their country to other countries, it promotes an understanding of how one’s quality life and position in the economy is connected to the nearby countries, also to both national and international organizations

As a citizen of Nigeria, it is expected of all to know their responsibilities such as personal and civic responsibilities to obey the law, attentive to public issues and paying taxes. It is also sacrosanct to know, civic education has help citizens to know appropriate sanction that will be melted out to whosoever that go against any of the rules, it also helps to equip citizens on what the right of the government is and what is expected of the citizens.

Civic education has helped youths to know what is expected of the government and also how to question the public office holder appropriately without breaking rules and approaches to show displeasure over government implemented policy and decrees that infringe on their fundamental rights of a citizen or encroach on what is not clearly stated in the country constitution. It has also helped youth and citizens to show patriotism to the country and also countrymen and women so as to live in a peaceful environment

As a matter of fact, a critical exegesis has been done on both social and economic importance of civic education in Nigeria, it has helped to broaden the level of our understanding, also how we discern the system of the government and rights of the citizens, on what is acceptable and what is totally barbaric to a given society, it has also help to look as issues as regards the community and the leadership in different perspectives on what is attainable from the citizen and what is acceptable from the rulers/authority as the case maybe.
